Reclaimed Water Use at the Osoyoos Golf Club
Reclaimed water is treated wastewater that’s safe for reuse. Our golf course uses up to 1.7 million gallons daily, helping manage about 150-160 million gallons annually. This practice is essential for the Town of Osoyoos to treat wastewater during the winter and contributes significantly to our sustainability efforts.
Why Do We Use Reclaimed Water?
- Conserves Fresh Water: Using reclaimed water reduces our reliance on fresh water, crucial in South Okanagan’s semi-arid climate and amidst growing municipal demands.
- Reduces Pollution: We prevent 85-90% of the Town’s wastewater from polluting waterways. Although costlier due to additional treatment, this method filters safely treated wastewater naturally through the soil.
- Improves Sustainability: Our course provides beautiful and valuable green spaces to the town. By turning what would be a town waste into a resource, this large-scale recycling program enhances our environmental footprint.
Using reclaimed water maximizes our water resources and supports our commitment to sustainable practices, making a significant impact on water conservation and environmental health.
Desert, Plant and Animal Protection
The Osoyoos Golf Course is home to several desert conservation areas. The South Okanagan is known as the Antelope-brush shrub-steppe, a semi-arid desert with diverse species and is home to 100 at-risk plant species and nearly 300 rare insects. While enjoying a round of golf, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that shares the course. Along the way, you may encounter birds, deer, coyotes, snakes, and many other creatures. We have established “do not enter” zones to minimize disturbances and protect this fragile ecosystem.
Our efforts help maintain balance and combat threats from invasive species. To reduce herbicide use and control weeds, we remove dead sagebrush and carefully manage irrigation. Where wind complicates water application, we convert areas to maintainable turf.
